Eco Schools
Hamsey Green Primary School is committed to educating its pupils about caring for and respecting the environment and developing responsible citizens who are able to make valuable decisions.
As part of our responsibility to the environment and as an Eco-School we aim:
- To develop an awareness of environmental issues
- To promote environmental issues and raise awareness amongst the wider school community
- To become more sustainable in the school environment and reduce the environmental impact of the whole school
- To link environmental issues with the curriculum
Hamsey Green Primary is proud to continue its membership of Eco-Schools and holds the Silver Green Flag Award.
The whole school works together to ensure that the Eco-School principals are embedded in the daily life of the school and indeed in the whole school community. The staff ensure that work is weaved creatively through the curriculum. The children are responsible for electing an Eco-Champion in their classroom. The Eco-School Reps are then encouraged to act as an eco-role model to the rest of the school, to encourage recycling, reduce litter in the playground, eat healthily and conserve energy.
Eco/Sustainability Project alongside Crystal Palace for Life Foundation
The Year 5 pupils have decided to concentrate on three key projects/areas that we want to focus on this year. The children have lots of ideas, but we think we have picked the three:
Energy – specifically reducing the school’s energy use- investigate mini solar panels, ensure doors are closed so we don't increase energy costs
Biodiversity- continue to plant hedgerows and trees - 1000 saplings in Dec 2024!
Transport- encourage our community to travel to school in a more eco-friendly way. They would like to host a 'Wheels Day' to promote the use of scooters, bicycles or skateboarding!
Waste which includes promoting Surrey’s Rethink Waste Scheme
What have we been up to?
Hedge and Tree Planting
We have planted trees on the field which will provide wildlife a safe haven as well as providing us much needed shade. We have also planted one thousand saplings which will form a mixed hedge around the school perimeter. Apparently, a hedge can support over 200 different species so we are supporting wildlife to improve the local habitats.
Pond Clearing
Time has also been spent clearing the pond area for all the creatures that live in here.
Litter Pickers
We have some new litter pickers which the children are very excited about. The children are helping to clear any litter on site as we have many cheeky squirrels and magpies who like to rummage!
